Frozen Shoulder

What is Frozen Shoulder? 

•Frozen Shoulder is stiffness & pain centered within the shoulder joint. 

•It is a gradually progressing condition. 
Over time pain gets worse & range of motion decline. 

•It occours when bone, tendons & ligaments thicken around the shoulder joint. 

•As frozen shoulder progresses the range of motion will decline. 

What are the symptoms? 
There are three main stages:

1-Freezing stage: 
              - Pain is sharp. 
              - Arm's Range of motion starts to be hampered. 

2-Frozen stage: 
            -  Pain lessens but the stiffness increases. 
             - Arm feels weak. 

3-Thowing stage:
               -Slowly the Range of motion returns to the affected joints. 

Symptoms tend to feel worse at night. 

What causes Frozen Shoulder? 

•If you had a shoulder injury chances of developing frozen shoulder. 

•Rotator cuff injury, stroke, broken arm, other areal traumas are precursors. 

•Frozen shoulder is more common with pre existing conditions such as-
                        -Hypothyroidism
                        -Hyperthyroidism
                        -Diabetes
                        -Heart disease
                        -Parkinson. 

•Women over 40 are the most at risk group to develop frozen shoulder. 

•Women recovering from a Mastectomy are at more risk. 

How is Frozen Shoulder treated? 

-Exercise can reduce the duration of symptoms & stages. 

-Physiotherapy aids in recovery from frozen shoulder. 

-Without treatment frozen shoulder will persist forever. 

-Consult your Physiotherapist will aid you in recovery. 

How long does Rehabilitation takes?

•Physiotherapy usually lasts from 2 to 6 weeks, with a frequency of visits daily to once a week & patient should engage in home exercise program. 

•Progress can take up  to 6 to 9 months for some patients. 

•Internal rotation(moving the hand to the back pocket or up to middle of your back) is usually the motion that takes the longest to regain.
